Papaya juice

That orange juice impostor over there? It’s papaya juice. I’m drawn to the glowing-golden orange hue of the ripe papaya, a noble pear-shaped tropical fruit native to Central America. And I adore the fruit’s thick, incredibly sweet and luscious flesh.

Even better: Nutritionally speaking, papayas are a so-called “super food,” with noted digestive benefits and stomach-soothing abilities; scientists think the fruit may also fight both cancer cells and kidney disease as well. Papayas contain the enzyme papain, which breaks down protein and naturally tenderizes meat; this has been noted since ancient times, when tropical cultures made a practice of wrapping papaya leaves around meat. Here’s how to pick a good papaya. Papayas are grown in the tropics around the globe, but Hawaii, Mexico, and South Africa are the commercial export hotbeds. In the tropics they grow year-round, but in supermarkets they’re mostly available in summer months.

Tip: When choosing a papaya, pick one that is subtly soft and gently gives to pressure much in the same way that a ripe avocado does; look for skin that is unmarred by bruises, cuts, or moldy spots. Store papayas at room temperature (never in a refrigerator) until ripe, then cut them in half lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Cut the fruit into manageable pieces, sprinkle with lime juice, and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving or juicing.

Amidst the fervor of the upcoming college football season, and the Trojan outrage over the punishment handed down to them by the NCAA in the Reggie Bush scandal, comes a new dynamic.

Should the Trojans leave the Pac-10 and declare themselves independent?

On the heels of BYU claiming their independence yesterday, the Orange County Register approached new USC athletic director, Pat Haden, and asked him to comment on the possibility of the Trojans cutting ties with the conference that is tied to so much of their history.

Surprisingly, Haden said he would consider it.

Saying, “I think you always have to look at every opportunity,” Haden went on, “But would we ever consider it? I think you have to. As an athletic director in today’s environment, you have to consider every alternative.”

New iPod Nano

Steve Jobs launched an insta-meme today by suggesting in his keynote that Apple’s new multi-touch iPod nano could be worn as a wristwatch.  The meme becomes a fad next week when the nano arrives in stores and people start actually wearing them on wrists. It’s going to happen, especially when third-party companies begin offering special-purpose wristwatch straps for it. I know it’s going to happen because I’m going to do it.

What’s important to note is that the new nano is by far the smallest ever gadget with real MPG (multi-touch physics and gestures). It’s the first significant consumer MPG device that’s not a so-called “computer” or cell phone or multi-purpose device. As such, it represents the future of mobile gadgets in general.

Download iTunes 10

If you find yourself confused by what you’ve read about iTunes to this point, don’t despair. Everything should be crystal clear by the time you finish.

iTunes 10

Like Siamese twins, the iPod and iTunes go hand-in-hand. This week’s iPod update, then brought a whole new version of iTunes, v10, with a new logo and a few new features.

The new icon abandons the old CD imagery and replaces it with a bulbous double-clef note in a blue circle. The features include music clean-up – select five or so songs from the same album and it automatically finds art and titles – and there is a new discovery feature with social aspects called Ping.

New Apple TV

Forget the iTV name, the refreshed Apple TV is still called the Apple TV. But that’s about where the similarities end. The entire system from the form factor to the UI is different; even the entire concept is different. I think we can officially say Apple is taking the Apple TV and the whole streaming market seriously now. It’s no longer just a hobby despite what Steve says.

New Apple TV

The new model is dramatically smaller than the old one — 1/4 of the size actually. It features 802.11n built in with HDMI, Ethernet, and optical audio on the backside. The power supply is even built-in. No more power bricks, people!

Obama’s Oval Office Makeover

From Ann Compton and Sunlen Miller:

Faced with a deteriorating economic horizon and while President Obama was vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard the Oval Office received a makeover, complete with a new carpet, new wallpaper and new furniture.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs – when asked by ABC’s Ann Compton in an interview this morning – downplayed the changes, saying that it was not “a whole lot different” than it looked a few days ago, and stressed that taxpayers did not foot the bill for the makeover.

“Some very modest changes not paid for at taxpayer expense,” Gibbs said, “As many presidents want to put their own little stamp on the office they spend so much time in, the president has done that in his own very modest way.”

The White House says the cost of the redesign was “in line with the amount spent by Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush on the redesigns of their Oval Office.”

The focal point of the room – the expensive sunburst carpet designed by then-First Lady Laura Bush has been replaced. The new beige carpet installed by President Obama features a traditional presidential seal in the center, with multiple quotes from former presidents, and one by Martin Luther King are around the border.
